Jam session open to all ages

TERRE HAUTE — Beginning musicians often struggle to find venues to display their talents. For those really young performers, finding a place to play may be especially difficult.

Not any more. Uncle Jimmy Travelin’ Jam Session will present an all-comers, all-instruments, all-styles and genres — and all-ages — open mic night on the stage of Tippecanoe Place, 2149 Tippecanoe St.

The open mic night will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Tuesday and continue every Tuesday.

“Tippecanoe Place offers a unique setting,” said co-organizer Robert Flott. His company, B3 Entertainment, is promoting these sessions. “We set up in the banquet center, and it’s not a bar. There is no smoking. Tippecanoe Place is a restaurant with great food, great prices, and a beautiful and safe environment for young musicians to perform.”

The jam session will be hosted by “Uncle” Jimmy Hollingsworth, and Otter Fundip. They will provide an electric guitar and amplifier rig, a bass guitar rig, and a drum set, plus a PA system. Musicians can bring their own instruments and rigs if they want.

The session is not limited to rock ’n’ roll. All styles of music are welcome and encouraged. For those who don’t have a complete band, but want to sit in with other musicians, stand-ins will be on hand.

Hollingsworth and Fundip can play multiple instruments — drums, guitar or bass — and can play multiple styles. They also collectively, have a large number of songs they can play. The event is also a chance for the newest area musicians to play with those with a bit more experience.

“We have commitments from several members of the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame to come and sit in,” Flott said. “This presents a unique opportunity for those starting out to work with the Valley’s best and most experienced performers.”

There is no cost for participating, although there will be a sign-up sheet. Each group will be limited to 15 to 20 minutes to allow as many musicians as possible to perform.

“This is not band practice for local bands, although we don’t mind if a band plays a couple of songs here as a group,” Flott said. “Our goal is to get as many people playing as possible.”
