‘The Nerd’ opens Friday in Vincennes

Comedy takes center stage on Friday when the Old Town Players community theatre opens the hilarious play, “The Nerd.”

Performances continue on Saturday and Sunday, and Dec. 14-16 at the OTP Theatre and Arts Center in Vincennes.

Tickets are on sale now at Eyeworks, First Vincennes Savings Bank, and the Vincennes University Bookstore. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. “The Nerd” may not be suitable for younger audiences.

The diverse cast is composed of both seasoned performers and newcomers to the OTP stage and features Tiffany Conover as Tansy McGinnis, Zane Grogan as Rick Steadman, Darby O’Flannery as Warnock Waldgrave, Lee Williams as Clelia Waldgrave, Rachelle Williams as Thorn Waldgrave, Darrell Wolven as Axel Hammond, and Daniel Christopher Wood as Willum Cubbert.

In “The Nerd” Willum Cubbert, an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in battle. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you.”

So Willum is delighted when Rick unexpectedly shows up at his apartment on the night of his birthday party.

But Willum’s delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” — a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence, and less tact. As Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leads to one uproarious incident after another.

Performances begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the OTP Theatre and Arts Center, 432 Broadway St. Tickets will be available at the door beginning one hour before show time. Group rates are available with advance registration. For more information call 812-882-1639 or visit www.oldtownplayers.org.
