Terre Haute North to present ‘Bye Bye Birdie’

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North Vigo High School students will feature their singing, dancing and acting talents in the production of the rockin’ musical “Bye Bye Birdie” next weekend in the school’s auditorium.

Opening night will be Thursday. The show starts at 7 p.m. Other performances will follow at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 and at 3 p.m. Dec. 1. Tickets for each show are $8 and are available for pre-purchase by contacting director Michelle Azar at Terre Haute North at 812-462-4312. Tickets will also be available at the auditorium box office, starting 45 minutes before each performance.

The school is at 3434 Maple Ave.

“Bye Bye Birdie” is inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley. The storyline focuses on his being drafted to serve in the U.S. Army in 1957. The rock star’s name in the show is “Conrad Birdie,” portrayed by sophomore John Sponsler.

“I have always loved Elvis and that style of music,” he said. “Playing a character inspired by this music icon is very powerful. I’m having fun with it.”

Other features of the story are a budding romance between Birdie’s agent/songwriter, Albert Peterson (junior Isaac White), and his sweetheart secretary, Rosie Alvarez (junior Makenzie Smokstad). They both plan to have Conrad Birdie sing Albert’s new song “One Last Kiss” and give a lucky fan girl a real “last kiss” on “The Ed Sullivan Show” before leaving for the Army. This lucky girl is Kim MacAfee (senior Emily Ferrell) from Sweet Apple, Ohio. All of the teenage girls go crazy over Conrad, especially when he sings “Honestly Sincere.”

Characters in the play also include Hugo Peabody (sophomore Will Rupert), Harry McAfee (junior Josh Tucker), Doris McAfee (junior Allison Sherrill) and Mae Peterson (senior Rachel Rodgers). The cast includes 50 students, and several musicians are featured in the orchestra.
