Terre Haute native pens book on Indiana soldier Jefferson C. Davis

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute native Jack A. Wilson has released a new book, “Indiana’s Foremost Nineteenth Century Soldier.”

The book is about Jefferson C. Davis, who was born in Clark County on a farm near Memphis, Ind. At age 18, he answered the call for volunteers for the Mexican War, and thus began a most illustrious military career of 33 years. This 71-page book outlines the career that shows Davis to be the foremost Hoosier soldier in the 19th century.

The career includes fighting under Gen. Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Buena Vista against the Mexican Gen. Santa Anna. It also includes Davis firing the first artillery shoot in response to the shelling by the Confederates of Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. Davis then fought for the Union army in the western campaigns and battles such as Pea Ridge, Stones River, Chikamauga, and Sherman’s campaign to capture Atlanta, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Sherman’s Carolina’s campaign. He rose to become one of Sherman’s most trusted corps commanders.

Following the Civil War, Davis engineered the Army’s redemptive campaign in the Modoc Indian War. He was the first military commander for the Alaska Territory upon the United States purchase of that land from Russia and he served in various other honorary assignments.

Hoosiers may indeed point to Davis with gratification for his being the foremost soldier from Indiana for his era.

The book includes four pages of footnotes for those interested in further seeking out sources for establishing the service of Davis.

The book is available from the author for $6, plus $2 shipping by sending the necessary funds to the author at 607 State St., Lawrenceville, IL 62439.
