Maple Avenue’s Summer Dinner Theatre Program will be performing its sixth season of dinner and musical theater. The cast is made up of performers from all over the Wabash Valley.

Dinner and a show are scheduled for Friday and Saturday and Aug. 3, and Aug. 4. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner is at 6:30 p.m., with the performance to follow. The cost is $25.

There also will be matinees with the show only, on Sunday and Aug. 5. The doors will open at 2 p.m., the show begins at 2:30 p.m. Concessions will  be available. The cost for the matinee is $15.

“The King and I” is based on the 1944 novel “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon and derives from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s.

The story deals with the experiences of the British schoolteacher, who is hired as part of the king’s drive to modernize his country.

The relationship between the king and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the musical, as well as by a love that neither is able to express.
