Celebrate ‘Sense and Sensibility’ anniversary at Vigo Library

TERRE HAUTE — Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” at the Vigo County Public Library.

“Sense and Sensibility,” Austen’s first published novel, was released on Oct. 31, 1811. It was released anonymously, only identifying it to be “by a Lady.” Since then, it has become her second most popular novel, behind “Pride and Prejudice.”

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of its publication, Dr. Kit Kincade, Indiana State University associate professor of English, in conjunction with Vigo County Public Library, will host a two-day event in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

On Wednesday, the 1995 version of the film, “Sense and Sensibility,” starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Allan Rickman, will be shown at 6 p.m.

On Oct. 28 at 3:30 p.m., Kincade will lead a book discussion on the novel, as well as issues of adapting the novel for the screen.

“Sense and Sensibility” is the story of two sisters who, with their mother and younger sister, are suddenly left penniless after the abrupt death of their father, who had never arranged for their care with a revised will.

The family is thrust out of its home and into a world where status was important, but money more so.

The sisters, Elinore and Marianne, are forced to contend with society’s prejudices against them while trying to find happiness and love.

Kincade is a specialist in 18th-century British literature and teaches a “Jane Austen and Popular Culture” class. She has presented on Jane Austen many times and is published on the novel.
