Zorah events celebrate 100 years

Zorah Shrine Potentate Fred D. Drake of Farmersburg invites Wabash Valley residents to the Zorah Shrine Temple’s Centennial Celebration and Potentate’s Ball Banquet on Saturday.

Events in the temple at 420 N. Seventh St. include:

n 5 p.m. — Grand Lodge of Indiana officers rededicate the temple.

n 6 p.m. — Hospitality hour.

n 7 p.m. — Dinner with centennial gift.

n 8 p.m. — Introductions of guests by Potentate Drake.

n 9 p.m. — Potentate Ball Band for entertainment and dancing.

Those wishing to attend need not be a Freemason. Admission to the dedication ceremonies are free. Dinner reservation tickets are $25 each and may be made by calling the temple office at (812) 232-8232.

Marshall Municipal Band to perform

The Marshall Municipal Band will perform a concert at 8 p.m. today on the Clark County Courthouse lawn.

The concert, under the direction of Harold Ellshoff, will open with “Golden Jubilee March,” trumpet feature “Trumpets, Ole!” and highlights from “West Side Story.” The concert will continue with “Overture On Civil War Themes”; Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Lion King” and “Pocahontas”; “Washington Grays” and “Valdres” marches; and conclude with “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Bring lawn chairs. The Lions Club will serve popcorn from the antique popcorn wagon on the square. Friday evening concerts on the courthouse lawn continue through Aug. 14.

Pearl Handle Band returns to Opry

The Pearl Handle Band returns to the Boot City Opry for the 2009 season. Previous shows have proven that the Pearl Handle Band will present a show of yesterday and have the audience singing and dancing right along with them.

Each member of the seasoned band is multi-talented and has the ability to play multiple instruments along with each performing solos of their own. In addition, the Pearl Handle Band has experience in backing up headliner stars which is a great addition to the Boot City Opry. The Pearl Handle Band performs at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Group to present ‘Hat’s Off to the USO’

Women of Note will perform songs from the 1940s when they present “Hat’s Off to the USO,” at 3 p.m. June 28 in the sanctuary of Armstrong United Methodist Church.

Swing music is up-tempo, joyous music with a wide full sound and couples often danced to it in the 1930s and 1940s. During World War II dances were sponsored by the USO featuring swing.

Dan Crews of Marshall will provide a setting for the music by sharing anecdotes and information about the World War II era.

There is no admission for this performance. It is a benefit for the Marshall Area Soldiers’ Support Group and a free-will offering will be taken to provide funds for the organization to send care packages to troops overseas. Those attending may bring non-perishable and non-meltable items to be included in these packages.

Women of Note is a Marshall based vocal jazz group. Any woman who enjoys singing is welcome to join. Members and performers for the 2009 season are: Allan Duke, Donna Duzan, Polly Enkoff, Linda Hart, Mary Alice Parks, Dena Porter, Lynn Wallace, Jeanette Warner, Priscilla Wieck and Rosemary Worley. Yvonne Shively is accompaniest for this performance.

The public is invited to attend. Armstrong Church is located five miles east of Marshall on U.S. 40.

Former detective, author to visit library

The Marshall Public Library at 612 Archer Ave. will host a book talk and signing by author Michale Callahan at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library’s Dale McConchie meeting room. Callahan recently released his first book, “Too Politically Sensitive.”

In 2000, Callahan was the newly promoted investigations commander over a nine-county area in East Central Illinois. His first assignment, to review the 14-year-old murder of young newlyweds Dyke and Karen Rhoads, would change his life forever; shattering his faith in the department he had loved and had dedicated his life to.

Rumblings from the Downstate Illinois Innocence Project, The Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University and an impending show on the CBS program 48 Hours were that two men had been wrongfully convicted for the murders. This attention drew deep concern from the administration of Gov. George Ryan and the command of the Illinois State Police.

Band to present ‘While The Cat’s Away …’

The Brazil Concert Band will present “While The Cat’s Away …” at 8 p.m. Sunday in Forest Park at Brazil, rain or shine.

As the theme suggests, director Matt Huber is the cat in question and his daughter, Janelle R. Huber, will wield the baton this week.

Janelle is a sophomore and music education major at Indiana State University where she performs on flute and piccolo in the Wind Orchestra and Marching Sycamores A Sycamore Scholar, she studies flute and piccolo with Joyce Wilson.

A seven-season veteran of the Brazil Concert Band, Janelle also is active in the Jackson Township Community Band and Community Theater of Clay County.

During her high school music career at Greencastle, Janelle performed in 13 all-state honor bands and the National John Philip Sousa Band. She received superior gold ratings in Group 1 on flute and piccolo from the eighth grade through senior year.

Selections this week by the Brazil Concert Band include “Noble Men” by Fillmore, “Cloth of Gold” and “Shrine of Liberty” by Jewell, “Star Dust” arranged by Yoder, and ”First Suite in E Flat” by Holst.

Also, “Loch Lomond” by Ticheli, “The Gridiron Club” and “The Bride-Elect” by Sousa, “Sea Songs” by Vaughan Williams and “Pirates of the Caribbean” arranged by Ricketts.

Motorcycle Club’s next ride June 27

Wabash Valley Motorcycle Club’s next Spring Out Ride is set for June 27. The ride and auction will benefit St. Ann’s free medical clinic.

Sign-in for the St. Ann benefit ride is at Ambrosini’s beginning at 10 a.m. The last stop is FOP at 14th and Hulman with last bike in at 4 p.m. The live auction will be at 5 p.m. The price is $10. There will be food, music, an auction and other activities at the last stop.

Anyone who does not want to ride motorcycles is welcome to join the auction and events at the last stop at FOP.

Coffee Grounds unveils River City exhibit

Works by members of the “River City Art Association, Inc., will be on display at Coffee Grounds, 423 Wabash Ave., during the month of July. A reception will be staged at 6 p.m. July 10. View the art and chat with the artists.

In the last few years, Terre Haute has definitely been doing a considerable amount of research and development. We now have an Arts Corridor with outdoor sculptures placed by the cultural alliance and several new galleries. Arts Illiana supports and encourages the growth of the arts in Terre Haute and other Indiana communities. River City Art Association members have placed artwork in empty store fronts along Wabash Avenue bringing a new sense of cultural involvement.

‘The Journey Through Oz’ at Scottish Rite

The Stage Hams will present “The Journey Through Oz” at the Scottish Rite, at the corner of eighth and Ohio, at 7 p.m. June 26 and at a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. June 27. “The Journey Through Oz” is an original script based on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by Frank Baum using both classical music and songs from the Broadway musical, “The Wizard of Oz.” Admission is free.

Planetarium to

present star program

The Allen Memorial Planetarium will be presenting a Seasonal Star Program at 6:30 p.m. June 26, 2 and 4 p.m. June 27 and at 2 p.m. June 28.

This 30 minute educational program will introduce the constellations and other astronomical wonders of the sky for the summer season. There is no charge for the program, however donations will be accepted.

The planetarium, located on the property of South Vigo High School, provides educational programs for students in the Vigo County School Corp., as well as students in the surrounding counties. In addition the planetarium provides programs for a variety of other community groups.

‘Summer Evening Garden Walk’ set

Covered Bridge Garden Club will sponsor the “Summer Evening Garden Walk,” from 4 to 8 p.m., June 27. The cost is $5. Featured homes on the garden tour include those of Mary and Mark Williamson, Kaye and Mike Lewman, Louise and George Michaels, Darlene and Tony Reeder, Judy and Dayle Payne and Miriam and David Lash.
