Traveling Lincoln exhibit visiting Valley
A special traveling exhibit about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War as seen through political cartoons will be on display in Marshall Public Library in Marshall, Ill., through Sept. 30.
Friends of Marshall Public Library have funded the cost of hosting the exhibit.
“Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era,” a national traveling exhibition, has been developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. This panel exhibit presents political cartoons illustrating how people responded to Lincoln and his policy of emancipation.
These cartoons are vividly biting; they invite us to put aside 21st century assumptions and look at events through the eyes of people living in the era. “Looking at Lincoln” offers insights into how racism was ingrained into 19th century American life. As Americans continue to debate the legacy of slavery, these cartoons provide a historical point of reference for current events.
Founded in 1994, the Lehrman Institute of New York promotes the study and love of American history. The institute’s initiatives target audiences ranging from students to scholars to the general public.
For more information on the exhibit, visit www.gilder
lehrman.org, or call the library at (217) 826-2535. The library is at 612 Archer Ave., in downtown Marshall, and at www.marshallillibrary.com. This traveling exhibit may be viewed during normal library hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The library is handicapped accessible. Allow 48 hours notice if special arrangements are needed.
