ISU Diversity Film Series celebrates American Indian heritage

TERRE HAUTE — The second film in Indiana State University’s Diversity Film Series, “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” will be shown Wednesday in the events area of the Cunningham Memorial Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate American Indian heritage month.

The film, inspired by Dee Brown’s 1971 bestseller, explores the impact America’s westward expansion had on the American Indian culture.

The Emmy-winning HBO film focuses on the events leading up to the massacre of the Sioux Indians. After the film, a discussion about the American Indian culture will be led by Jane Creedon, curator of the Native American Museum in Dobbs Park and a descendant of several American Indian tribes in the area. Other dates in the film series are Jan. 5, spotlighting the Asian culture; Feb. 7, celebrating black heritage; Feb. 26, previewing Disability Awareness Month; and April 8, raising awareness of human rights.

The series, sponsored by the President’s Commission for the Enhancement of Diversity Resources, is free.

For more details on the film series or the Commission, contact LaNeeca Williams, interim director of Diversity and Affirmative Action, at (812) 237-2877.
