Community Theatre of Clay County announces season lineup

BRAZIL — Community Theatre of Clay County, Inc. will kick off its 29th season Sept. 21-22 with a special production by the theatre.

“Into The Woods” will be performed concert-style which will allow the audience and cast members to join close together in a musical experience.

Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale includes a cast of familiar characters, such as Little Red, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk).

What begins as a lively fantasy becomes a moving lesson about the stories we tell our children.

Community Theatre follows with “Annie” on Nov. 1-3. This large-scale production is brought to the community through the generous support of Riddell National Bank.

The popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals. Annie is a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s evil plans, befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new family and home in billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

Next comes the much beloved and anticipated Christmas production sponsored by the French Family of Brazil.

This year the Theatre Singers will give voice to “Christmas At The Lark: A Tapestry of Light” with show dates of Dec. 6-8.

The Theatre starts the new year with its popular Young Actor’s production. The performances are presented by a cast entirely made of the area’s youth.

This year’s selection is “OZ!” to be performed Feb. 15-17. The timeless “Wizard of Oz” tale has been adapted into a musical. A cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. All of Baum’s lovable characters, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West, who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister.

Shortly thereafter, Community Theatre will present “An Evening With The Masters (A Dessert Theater)” March 1-2. The evening will be a fast-paced choral revue highlighting some of the greatest works by the composers who have made American theatrical music what it is today.

The season will close with the hilarious, stage comedy “Never Too Late.” Show dates are May 3-4. A married man in his 50s suddenly learns he’s becoming a father again.

His last child was born 24 years ago and, considering the man she married, he finds the prospect of another unthinkable. His daughter and son-in-law live with him and another mouth to feed is on the way.

It’s not only the impending birth that startles him; his previously meek little wife begins to lay down the law. The result is non-stop chaos and hilarity.
