Gaslight Art Colony to host Artists’ Reception for photographer, fiber artist

MARSHALL, ILL. — Gaslight Art Colony will host an Artists’ Reception for photographer Sean Hoisington and fiber artist Ruth Ann Sheehy from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit of their artwork can also be viewed during regular gallery hours through Oct. 13.

Hoisington is currently an Indiana-based artist who teaches photography at Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley in Terre Haute and The Art Institute of Indianapolis. Hoisington earned his master’s in fine arts in photography from Indiana State University.

As an award-winning artist, Hoisington creates a cinematic reality inhabited by characters reminiscent of the past, yet that exist in the present. A strong narrative with an ambiguous plot dominates his work as the story unfolds through multiple images depicting characters in conflict. Their personal psychodramas may be centered around inner turmoil or physical jeopardy, to which they react with impulsivity or teeter on the cusp of a dramatic decision, coping with the fallout from previous actions or fleeing the monotony of their lives.

Obscuring the identity of the characters increases mystery, and allows the viewer to act as voyeur or participant. The retro styling, including vintage clothing, antique props, dated sets, and film noir lighting, recalls a feeling of dusty romanticism and a twisted idealization of the past or unknown.

Sheehy first became interested in art while working on 4-H projects. The first formal art instruction she had was the art education class for elementary education majors at Eastern Illinois University.

“It was like a light coming on for me and I changed my major to art education,” Sheehy said.

She thoroughly enjoyed art classes at Eastern and graduated from there in 1970 with a bachelor’s in education and an art education certification. In 1970 she started teaching art to all grades at the Chrisman, Ill., schools. In 1992 she received a master’s degree from Indiana State University in curriculum and instruction with advanced art classes and in 1994 completed advanced course work in educational administration at Eastern.

Sheehy retired in 2003 and now works in her studio at her home north of Paris. “I have always enjoyed creating three-dimensional art, especially ceramics, sculpture, weaving, and jewelry. My work tends to be focused on the fiber arts, especially art quilts. I am influenced by nature and the out of doors. I like to use bright colors and play with textures in my quilts.”

Gaslight Art Colony is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to broadening an appreciation of the arts by providing opportunities that promote awareness, participation and understanding through fine arts exhibitions, classes and workshops. The gallery is at 516 Archer Ave., in Marshall, Ill.. Visit www.gaslightartcolony.com, email gaslightartcolony@gmail.com or cal1 217-808-2115.
