Wabash Valley Art Guild features photographer in September

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Art Guild’s September display is approaching its final weekend at the Vigo County Public Library. The Artist of the Month is Guild member and photographer Marvetta Bee.

While her education is unrelated to art — she has degrees in education and school counseling from Indiana State University — Bee says she can’t think of a time when she was not engrossed in art of some form or another. In the past her artistic expressions were in the form of embroidery, crocheting and jewelry making. More recently, photography has been the main medium that engages her creative spirit.

In her photography, Bee is often drawn to nature, and especially its animal life. Her picture titled “Sleeping Kitty,” an award winner at the Indiana State Fair and currently on display at the library, is an example of her “soft corner” for animals. Her other favorite subject is people in their “natural” state, in the midst of everyday life, unaware of being photographed. One of her subjects is her first grandchild, of whom Bee admits to having taken more than 200 frames in the process of capturing his one-month portrait.

Other works of Bee shown at the library are titled “Let’s Run ‘Em,” a picture inspired by her husband’s “ride-along” experience in NASCAR with a professional driver, and “Paris in Vegas,” a photo of the namesake hotel in Las Vegas. Every time she studies this shot, she says she is enthralled by the drama of the structure set against the night sky.

One of her most recent works is a montage of photographs taken at the Oklahoma City Bombing memorial. Bee says photographing the site was a profound, emotional experience. This piece and two others are currently being shown at the Arts Illiana Museum in downtown Terre Haute. The Bicentennial Art Center & Museum in Paris, Ill., and the Covered Bridge Art Association Gallery in Rockville have also shown Bee’s photography this season.

Apart from the Wabash Valley Art Guild, Bee is also an active member of the Central Indiana Artists, the Covered Bridge Art Association, and the Paris Art Center.
