Family Learning Day activities Sept. 22 at library, downtown

TERRE HAUTE — The 17th Annual Family Learning Day Downtown will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Vigo County Public Library. With more than 40 events planned for the library site, and many others downtown, families should check the schedule to take full advantage of the day. Schedules are available at the library or from www.vigo.lib.in.us.

A main emphasis of Family Learning Day is to promote reading together. Free book giveaways take place at multicultural storytime, book bingo, the book walk and at the Swope Art Museum. This year, Sam’s Club will again be bringing thousands of books for their table, the first stop for many families.

At 11 a.m., join Professor Steve for wacky antics and science experiments in the library meeting rooms downstairs. Science is never boring with Professor Steve, who will be presenting his Flight and Space Show. Discover the dreamers that made aviation and space flight possible. Check out the amazing designs of Leonardo Da Vinci and the Wright Brothers. See what happens to a poor, innocent marshmallow in a vacuum. The event is designed for the whole family to learn something new. There will also be 50 free books courtesy of Altrusa International of Terre Haute.

Families can make crafts, try a musical petting zoo, do a marble painting, take a horse trolley ride and more. Family Learning Day is sponsored by Altrusa International of Terre Haute, Friends of the Vigo County Public Library, Sam’s Club, The Walmart Foundation and the Wabash Valley Literacy Coalition. The event is coordinated by Vigo County Public Library.
