Geographer to tell story of ‘The Long Walk’ at Vigo Library Brown Bag

TERRE HAUTE — Titled “The Long Walk,” geographer Dorothy Drummond will tell the story of the thousand-year-old pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain during a Brown Bag program at the Vigo County Public Library.

The presentation will be at 12:10 p.m. Sept. 20.

In the Middle Ages and later, millions of pilgrims from throughout Europe journeyed to Compostela to honor the supposed burial place of the Apostle Saint James. Today pilgrims continue to walk to Compostela in ever-growing numbers.

For some Middle Ages pilgrims, coming from distances as far as Iceland, Scotland, Finland or Sicily, the pilgrimage to Compostela could require a dangerous voyage, then a walk of a thousand miles or more. The routes they walked were variously called “The Way of Saint James,” the “Camino de Santiago” or the “Jacobean Way,” and today these routes are marked by United Nations World Heritage signs.

Most modern pilgrims — nearing a million a year — now fly or bus to the southern foot of the Pyrenees Mountains and begin their 500-mile walk from there. Many, however, choose to begin their walk in Paris, as did millions of former pilgrims. Some come by bicycle, but must walk the final 50 miles or so if they wish to be received as pilgrims. Some make the Long Walk in a single year. Others walk segments of The Way each year for up to 10 years or more.

Not all modern-day pilgrims come for religious reasons. Many embark on the arduous Long Walk for personal reasons, in an attempt to “find themselves,” or to test their resolve. But those seeking to have their credential or pilgrim passport stamped at their final destination, to receive their Compostela at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, must provide evidence of religious motivation.

No reservations are required for the program. Patrons may bring a lunch to eat during the presentation.
