TERRE HAUTE —
Vigo County Democrats selected David R. Crockett as their candidate for county clerk for the general election in November.
Crockett defeated challenger C. Dwayne Malone 5,814 to 1,574. Republicans did not post a candidate for county clerk, but have until noon June 30 to select a candidate through a party caucus.
The vote total does not include electronic votes, cast on voting machines for the handicapped, which were not counted as of press time. Vote totals are unofficial until certified by the Vigo County Election Board by noon May 18.
Crockett, 57, is the current Vigo County treasurer, but by state law is limited to serving two consecutive terms.
“Obviously this is just the primary election, but it is a great feeling to win, and I truly appreciate the help of the people who worked for me and the public who went out and voted for me,” Crockett said.
“I think a lot of people know me, and I think a lot of this has to do with experience and the way I have worked in the treasurer’s office to do best for people of Vigo County, and I will continue to do that” if elected clerk in the November election, Crockett said.
Malone, 44, congratulated his opponent, saying he “wishes Mr. Crockett the best in his future endeavors as a new county clerk.”
