A close primary race among Democrats to represent Indiana’s 46th House District remained undecided late Tuesday night.
Jim Mann II, a social studies teacher at Terre Haute South Vigo High School, had an approximately 300-vote lead with 90 percent of the votes counted about 10 p.m. The candidate in second place, Chuck Toth, was not prepared to concede at that time, but was still watching the returns as the Tribune-Star went to press.
With 90 percent of the votes tallied, Mann had 45 percent of the votes over 35 percent for Toth. A third Democrat, Larry Barker of Monroe County, had 20 percent.
Mann said late Tuesday he was “cautiously optimistic” with his lead. “I’m just very, very humbled that the voters have apparently given me this opportunity. This has been a great team effort.”
Mann, 47, who has taught in the Vigo County School Corp. since 1987, said if he is the eventual winner, his campaign for the fall election would address all voters. And he emphasized that he will remain a staunch supporter of Indiana’s teachers.
“Hopefully, my message will be well-received,” Mann said.
The winner of the 46th District Democratic Primary Election will face Bob Heaton, a first-term Republican, in November. Heaton was unopposed in the GOP primary Tuesday.
Indiana’s 46th District includes voters in Vigo, Clay, Owen and Monroe counties.
