TERRE HAUTE — Vermillion County has some new faces on the primary ballots this year.

“I think people are fired up,” said Joanie Klotz, a member of the absentee voter board within the county clerk’s office.

Six Democrats are vying for the three Vermillion County Council at-large seats, Klotz noted, and two of the challengers, Milisa Carty and Jill Wesch, are first-time candidates, indicating a new interest in politics in the county, she said. The names of the top three vote-getters will be placed on the November General Election ballot.

Incumbent candidates are also out in force for the Democratic primary. All eligible incumbents are seeking re-election this year. Only Darrin Tucker, the current coroner first elected in 2004, may not seek another term due to Indiana’s eight-year term limits on county coroners.

The most crowded race on the May 8 Democratic Primary ballot is for County Council at-large. Incumbents Michael Costello, Lavonna Mattick and Randy Padish are facing challenges from Bill Bybee, Milisa Carty, Robert F. Lindsey Jr. and Jill Wesch.

Democratic voters will also have a choice in the surveyor’s race where incumbent Jared Dreher is being challenged by Lisa A. Gilman. There is also a three-way race among Democrats in the coroner’s race. Roger Lewis, Brian Morris and Chuck Procarione are all seeking the Democratic nomination to run for coroner in November.

On the Republican ballot, just the races for County Commissioner District 1 and coroner include GOP candidates, both of them uncontested. However, the GOP plans to name candidates to fill vacancies currently in county races later this year, said Tim Yocum, Vermillion County Republican Party chair.
