Voters flock to polls to support their candidates

TERRE HAUTE — Small towns throughout the Wabash Valley cranked out the votes Tuesday, electing town council members and officials.

• Clay County voter turnout measured 28.13 percent, with 1,775 citizens of 6,309 registered voters participating.

In Brazil, incumbent Democrat city-clerk treasurer Karen McQueen received 773 votes to Republican Mary Fisher’s 721.

For city council’s at-large seat, Democrat Tyler Hutcheson upset incumbent Republican Patricia Heffner by a vote of 748 to 742.

In the city council’s first ward, incumbent Democrat Brad Deal received 255 votes to Republican Gary Rickert’s 64.

In the city council’s third ward, outgoing Mayor A. Ann Bradshaw received 229 votes as a Democrat candidate, beating out Independent Mark Bedwell’s 186. No Republicans ran for that seat.

In the city council’s fourth ward, Republican challenger Dustin Jorgensen received 225 votes to upset incumbent Democrat William Lovett’s 153.

In Clay City, Democrat Melinda Sue Booe received 128 votes for the town’s clerk-treasurer, defeating Republican Danny Wilson’s 25.

The top three vote tallies for Clay City’s five-person town council race were Democrat Guy Dickerson with 123, Republican Roy Chenoweth with 111 and Republican Roy Freeman with 104.

In Knightsville, Republican Jason Walker received 51 votes for that town’s clerk-treasurer, trumping Democrat Charlotte Reyher’s tally of 35.

• In Vermillion County, 1,097 voters out of 5,287 registered voters participated for a turnout percentage of 20.75.

Democrat Sami Lynn Dillon received 147 votes for the position of Cayuga clerk-treasurer, beating out Republican Betty Osborne’s count of 53.

In Clinton, Republican Jim Bekkering appeared to edge out Democrat Chris Bishop in the race for the city council’s fourth ward by one vote. The unofficial count Tuesday evening had Bekkering with 111 votes and Bishop with 110.

• In Sullivan, Democrat D. Sue Pitts received 703 votes for the position of that city’s clerk-treasurer, beating out Republican Elanna Luttrell’s 295.

For the city council’s third ward, Democrat Raymond Pirtle received 674 votes to Republican Norman Morris’ 307. In the fourth ward, Democrat Scott Brown received 715 votes to Republican Lasinda Jane Hall’s 271.

Sullivan County Clerk’s office personnel reported a turnout of 31 percent.

• In Greene County, Democrat Charlotte Thomas received 187 votes for the position of Jasonville clerk-treasurer, beating out Republican James Seifert’s 108.

In the race for Jasonville City Council’s first ward seat, Republican Kent May received 194 votes, beating Democrat Drew Landry’s 109.

The race for the Linton Town Council Fifth Ward seat went to Democrat Fred Marke with 116 votes, over Republican Kegan Inman’s 35. In that town’s race for the seventh ward seat, Democrat Nigel Lehman received 165 votes to Jared Albright’s 158.

The Bloomfield Town Council’s first ward seat went to Democrat Douglas Fry with 171 votes, beating out Republican Homer Adams’ 126. That town’s third ward race went to Republican David Harding with 161 votes over Democrat Paul Hash’s 140.

In Worthington, the town’s clerk-treasurer race went to Democrat Gloria Klass with 225 votes, beating out Republican Jessica Baker’s 57.
