Election Day: Bennett-Nation mayoral faceoff leads TH ballot in today’s voting

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute voters will select a mayor and city council members today as polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.

Six uncontested candidates will not appear on the ballot because of a new state law. Voters, however, will select a mayor, city judge and council members in city council districts 1, 2, 3 and 6.

The six uncontested candidates, all Democrats, are incumbent council members Todd Nation in District 4; Neil Garrison in District 5; George Azar, Jim Chalos and Don Morris, all at-large; and city clerk Chuck Hanley.

Leading ballot interest in Terre Haute is the mayoral race beween Repuboican incumbent Duke Bennett and Democrat challenger Fred Nation.

The number of registered voters for the municipal election has risen since the primary election in May. There are now 39,106 registered voters, compared with 38,653 during the primary election.

Early absentee ballot voting was reduced to two weeks instead of 30 days before the election, a measure allowed by law during a municipal election. However, two Saturdays were available to cast a ballot.

As of late Monday, 1,248 absentee ballots had been cast. That includes 110 ballots cast Saturday, when the courthouse was open for special voting hours. In addition, 446 ballots were received via mail; 118 voted before a bipartisan confined voting board; and 764 voted in person.

Monday at noon was the deadline to receive a ballot application from a military or overseas voter requesting to vote by electronic mail or fax. The county received just one such application, said Vigo County Clerk Patricia Mansard.

“While that is unusual, there will be much more such applications next year in the presidential election,” Mansard said. “I just hope they [military voters] will be back next year and can vote in-person.”

Voters should ensure they have a valid government-issued photo identification when they enter the polls today.

The ID, according to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office, must meet four criteria for a voter to cast a ballot — display your photo; display your name, which must conform to your voter registration record; display an expiration date; and either be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last general election (November 2, 2010). This includes military IDs with expiration dates of INDEF; and be an ID issued by the state of Indiana or the U.S. government.
