Incumbent John Mullican takes 64 percent of vote

TERRE HAUTE — As he watched election results Tuesday night, John Mullican was cautious about acknowledging victory too soon, even though he appeared to be well ahead with most precincts counted.

Once election returns were in, Mullican, a Democrat incumbent, had defeated Republican Lonnie M. Moody II in the Terre Haute City Council District 6 race by a vote of 889 to 494. Mullican took 64 percent of the vote.

Results are unofficial until certified by the Vigo County Election Board on Nov. 18.

“I’ve worked really hard as a councilman and in this election, and it’s gratifying and humbling to have another opportunity to serve the sixth district,” said Mullican, who serves as city council president. “I’m pleased to have that vote of confidence from my constituents.”

He watched election returns at his business, Goetz Printing, with his brother, Mark, and sister-in-law, Sarah Mullican, who won her race for Terre Haute City Judge.

John Mullican talked about some of his goals for the next four years. “I’m going to continue to work really hard on quality-of-life issues,” he said. That includes identifying and dealing with houses that are unsafe and cleaning up trash. Those are issues “that really affect people’s day-to-day living,” he said.

Another goal is to expand the information available to council members when businesses seek tax abatements, a tool the city has to promote economic development and help create jobs. “We need to make sure we’re using that tool effectively,” he said.

On personal property abatements in some circumstances, he said, “It would be helpful to actually have a more detailed listing of equipment we would be abating taxes on.”

This past year, he said, the council has made strides with transparency, and “sunshine,” and city council meetings are now shown on Time-Warner Cable, he said. Greater transparency “was one of my goals at the start of the year.” The council also now meets at 6 p.m. rather than 7 p.m.

Moody, who ran against Mullican four years ago as an independent, said Tuesday night, “I gave it my best and the voters made their decision.”
