Loudermilk tops Flott in rematch

TERRE HAUTE — In what was a rematch of four years earlier, the final result remained the same on Tuesday as incumbent Norm Loudermilk won re-election to a fifth term on the Terre Haute City Council, representing District 3.

Loudermilk defeated Republican Robert Flott with 55 percent of the vote, or 919 votes, compared with 733 for Flott, who captured 45 percent of the vote.

Election results are unofficial until certified by the Vigo County Election Board. The board will certify results by noon Nov. 18.

Four years ago, Loudermilk garnered 1,212 votes while Flott received 740 votes.

Loudermilk, 46, said he was preparing to congratulate Mayor Duke Bennett on his re-election, when contacted by telephone Tuesday evening.

“I am relieved. I have to say thanks to God for giving me this opportunity and to the voters in District 3 to have the confidence and trust in me to let me serve another term,” Loudermilk said.

“I could never have done this without my wife and my kids, who are my strength throughout all this tumultuous situation that was going on with all the lies and innuendoes that were spewing about me,” Loudermilk said.

“The city’s resounding support of Duke Bennett, I believe, had some coattail effect for votes for my challenger. I also think even some of the negative ads that Fred Nation ran, knowing that I am a Democrat, may also have [affected the total vote]. And the last thing was all the innuendoes of the fire training center, even though I was exonerated and vindicated, if you will, it was a tough sell,” Loudermilk said.

Flott, 48, said he is uncertain if he will again seek election to the district in four years. Flott disagrees on any coattail votes from Bennett. “I am not sure the mayoral race had any impact. I think people were picking and choosing and voting individual,” Flott said. “For the most part, people were splitting the ticket, and that is a good thing.”
