MAX JONES: Resuming partnership for political information

TERRE HAUTE — Primary elections don’t always stir a lot of interest among voters. In fact, turnout at the polls is traditionally low for primaries, although there have been exceptions. This year may be one of those.

National and state politics have been on people’s minds in recent months, partly because of compelling issues related to the economy and health care. It’s been hard to avoid the heated discussion and debate surrounding those issues, and many people have formed strong opinions about them. With an election occurring at a time when political awareness is intense, a higher-than-normal turnout at the polls would not be surprising.

You can see the interest in the upcoming election on the local level, even though most of the races on the ballot have little to do with state or national politics. There are a number of candidate forums being sponsored by a variety of organizations already on the calendar.

The Tribune-Star is pleased to be a partner again this year with the League of Women Voters of Vigo County in sponsoring three candidate forums in three consecutive weeks later this month. The first is set for Tuesday, April 13, and will feature Democrat candidates for Vigo County prosecutor, and candidates for seats on the Vigo County Council from District 2 and District 4.

The second forum is Wednesday, April 21, and will feature candidates in the contested Democratic Party primary race for state representative in District 46, and in the contested Republican primary for state senator in District 39.

We will co-sponsor our final forum on Thursday, April 29. That one will feature both parties’ candidates for Vigo County sheriff.

The forums are being conducted this year at the Vigo County Annex at First and Oak streets, Terre Haute. They will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude by 9 p.m.

The public, of course, is invited to attend and participate by submitting questions in writing before or during the event. If all goes well, the Tribune-Star intends to video the forums and post them on our Web site.

If you cannot attend but have a question for candidates you would like to submit for consideration, you can do so by e-mailing me at the address at the bottom of this column, or mailing a question to me at the Tribune-Star, P.O. Box 149, Terre Haute IN 47808.

On a related note, the Tribune-Star will publish a special primary election section on Friday, April 23.

It has been more than a decade since we’ve presented election news in a special section rather than in the pages of our daily and Sunday newspaper. We think this is a reader-friendly approach to election and candidate information, and we will be anxious to get reader reaction to the section once it appears.

The primary election is Tuesday, May 4. We plan to publish sample ballots for our readers as part of our election coverage. If we don’t have space to publish those in our special section, we will publish them in our daily/Sunday newspaper.
