EDITORIAL: Chalos records a valuable asset

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute has a long, rich and colorful political history that spans many decades. It includes bigger-than-life personalities that exemplify the grit and grace of hard-working, proud and passionate people whose community commitment coursed through their veins.

Any short list of those individuals includes the late Pete Chalos, a teacher, coach, and longtime mayor who served four terms in the city’s highest office. He arrived on the political scene at a time when the city was rocked with scandal and allegations of corruption. His presence over time helped restore credibility and integrity to the public sphere.

With that legacy in mind, it was great to see his name back in the news this week with the Chalos family’s donation of the mayor’s official records to the Vigo County Public Library.

We’re certain the archives, when sorted, will be valuable assets to those who study local history. And they will provide a fresh and insightful profile of a man who dominated the political scene from 1980 to 1995.

We join the community in thanking the Chalos family for the donation and sharing their pride in an individual whose immeasurable contributions made Terre Haute a better place.
