EDITORIAL: New chance to bleed blue

Community can be proud of Sycamores’ achievement

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley are keenly aware of the perks and benefits that exist in a community where top-notch institutions of higher learning exist. They also know how special it is when one of those institutions is a state university that boasts a Division I NCAA athletic program.

The energy and entertainment value of such a program takes center stage again this week as Indiana State University enjoys its selection to the 2012 NCAA men’s baseball tournament field and prepares for its opening game of the double-elimination regional on Friday in Eugene, Ore.

It bears repeating. This a big deal for the Sycamores’ athletic program and for our community.

ISU earned an at-large berth in the tourney this year, based in part on its stellar overall record (41-17) and its impressive finish atop the standings in Missouri Valley Conference regular season competition. While the Sycamores had hoped such a bid would have them playing close to home in a regional tourney in northern Indiana hosted by Purdue, they are happy nonetheless to be traveling west to participate as a No. 3 seed in a four-team grouping hosted by the University of Oregon. Joining ISU and Oregon in the field are No. 2 seed Cal State-Fullerton and No. 4 seed Austin Peay.

Clearly, coach Rick Heller’s team is a special group. Generating even more interest for local fans is the fact that six members are from the Wabash Valley, including three who graduated from West Vigo High School.

The Sycamores’ appearance in the NCAA baseball tournament is the team’s first since 1995, which underscores the magnitude of the accomplishment. If ISU can win this regional, it would advance to a two-team super regional and then, if successful, to the College World Series, a level it last achieved in 1986.

It’s great to see the Sycamores’ flag waving proudly again for the baseball boys in blue. Earning a place in the NCAA tournament is good for the athletics program, the university and the community. We congratulate the players, coaches and all who assist the program in any way. And we join the community in wishing them all the best on the field this weekend.
