EDITORIAL: Sights set on lofty goal

United Way charges ahead on its community mission

TERRE HAUTE — There isn’t much to be surprised about when it comes to the fundraising prowess of the United Way of the Wabash Valley. In both good times and bad, the organization manages to galvanize the community and unite it around a common goal — that of filling coffers high enough to financially support 33 nonprofit agencies that often depend on it to keep valuable services flowing to those in need.

But that doesn’t mean we should ever take this amazing organization for granted. We should not. Even though it remains consistent in its delivery of funds for community service, it’s important that we remind ourselves to be impressed and grateful for the job it does.

The local United Way, which serves Vigo, Clay, Sullivan, Parke and Vermillion counties in Indiana and Clark County in Illinois, kicked off its annual campaign this week by announcing a fundraising goal of $1.86 million. Of that total, its leaders and volunteers revealed that a pilot program conducted earlier this summer has already raised 38 percent of the goal, $718,840.

Everyone is quick to acknowledge there is a long way to go to reach the $1.86 million goal, but the outstanding start by the pilot program is a sterling example of the high regard with which United Way is held in area communities.

In addition to United Way’s strong foundation in our communities, its 33 member agencies, such as Catholic Charities and CHANCES for Indiana Youth in Terre Haute, also have the confidence of the thousands of people and hundreds of local businesses and corporations who contribute.

United Way’s formula for success is strong and worthy of respect.

We congratulate the organization for its good start to the annual campaign and wish it well as it moves toward reaching its fundraising goal in early 2013. There is hard work ahead, and we know if anyone can reach this goal, United Way of the Wabash Valley can.
