TERRE HAUTE —
It would be foolish in any community to take “positives” for granted, but it’s easy to understand how a casual observer would assume that United Way of the Wabash Valley will always come through with flying colors.
Even in the tough economic times of recent years, when ultimate goals were missed more than hit, the local United Way’s fundraising machine has performed above and beyond expectations.
The organization has long been an anchor of community commitment and dedication.
United Way of the Wabash Valley once again has performed admirably. At its annual banquet Monday night, the organization announced it had met — and surpassed — its 2011 fundraising goal of $1.85 million. The announced tally: $1,854,607.
Amazing.
There are lots of reasons why this United Way chapter has been able to sustain a successful run of fundraising campaigns. Even when the organization doesn’t meet a stated goal, which happened for a few years when the local economy struggled during the past decade, its ability to raise significant sums of money for agencies that deliver vital social services to vulnerable families and children has remained strong.
Fundamentally, communities of the Wabash Valley and their people recognize the needs that exist and are willing to donate money to help meet them. And, based on past performance, they have trust and faith in United Way as the proper vehicle to deliver funds to 30-plus agencies that have the greatest impact on those needs.
Beyond that, United Way of the Wabash Valley has a stable and active base of community volunteers to assist its skilled and experienced staff. We commend Executive Director Troy Fears and his team of professionals for their continued efforts, and we applaud the exceptional work of Campaign Chair Bernice Helman and Board President Sally Zuel for leading dedicated volunteers through the long and grueling fundraising process.
Most of all, we salute the people who give generously so that others in the community can live better, more productive lives.
