EDITORIAL: The season for debate

Forums give voters great opportunities to learn

The season of political discourse began in earnest Wednesday night as President Obama and Mitt Romney met for the first of three face-to-face debates prior to the Nov. 6 general election.

Debates are a special tradition in America, with many defining moments for political candidates occurring during their often short time spans. They not only reveal individuals’ knowledge of and position on issues, they can sometimes open a window into a candidate’s soul.

The debate season in Indiana will be in full swing next week as candidates for governor meet in the first of three televised debates. The opening debate will take place on Wednesday at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center and will feature Republican Mike Pence, Democrat John Gregg and Libertarian Rupert Boneham.

The second and third gubernatorial debates will be at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend on Wednesday, Oct. 17, and in the studio of WFWA PBS39 in Fort Wayne on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Candidates for Indiana’s open U.S. Senate seat will meet in the first of two televised debates on Monday, Oct. 15, in the studios of WFYI in Indianapolis. Republican Richard Mourdock, Democrat Joe Donnelly and Libertarian Andrew Horning will debate for the final time at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

The series of five debates for statewide offices are sponsored by the Indiana Debate Commission. Each of the one-hour debates will begin at 7 p.m. EDT.

Voters are encouraged to submit questions for possible use during the debates by visiting www.indianadebate

commission.com.

On the local level, the League of Women Voters of Vigo County, the Vigo County Public Library and the Tribune-Star will be co-hosting two candidate forums in the council chambers of the Vigo County Annex.

Candidates for councilman-at-large and commissioner will be featured on Monday, Oct. 22, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Candidates for state representative in districts 42, 43, 45 and 46 will be featured on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 7-9 p.m.

Candidate debates and forums of this type present unique opportunities for voters. We urge you to take advantage.
