TERRE HAUTE —

Be alert to new construction

season along Interstate 70

Spring has arrived. Finally.

While the weather hasn’t yet begun to synchronize with the official calendar, there are some sure signs of the season emerging. Highway construction cones and barrels are the most obvious, especially along Interstate 70 between Terre Haute and Indianapolis.

The winter break in the multi-year I-70 repaving project is ending. That means lane restrictions will once again be the norm in coming days and weeks as the Indiana Department of Transportation and its contractors work to finish the job this year. If all goes well, all new pavement will soon exist along the freeway from the state’s western border in Vigo County to the Hendricks-Marion county border in central Indiana.

Those who travel I-70, and that includes just about all of us, know how dangerous the interstate can be when construction zones emerge. Last year was among the deadliest ever. Motorists’ inattention to conditions and lack of adherence to traffic laws contributed to most of the crashes.

We urge motorists to be on high alert this construction season. Observe all traffic laws. Don’t be part of the problem. Drive safely.

In honor of those who served

This week, we observe the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. Let us be reminded that nearly 4,500 Americans and more than 100,000 Iraqis lost their lives. Thousands more were injured, their lives altered forever. Hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars were spent.

Public opinion on the politics of that war remains divided. Nevertheless, America must always honor its war veterans and be grateful for their service.

We bow our heads in prayer for those who lost their lives in the Iraq war. And we salute all who served.
