TERRE HAUTE —
It should not go unnoticed that the U.S. Congress did something in recent days that has been rare, if not unheard of, in its current session. It reached bipartisan agreement on a matter of importance to the American people.
Let “shock and awe” commence.
Congress on Friday approved the $143 million payroll tax cut sought by President Obama, as well as an extension of jobless benefits for millions of out-of-work Americans.
The bill, according to the Associated Press, allows 160 million workers to continue to receive a 2 percentage point increase in their paychecks, and people out of work for more than six months would keep jobless benefits averaging about $300 a week. It also stops a deep cut in reimbursements for doctors who treat Medicare patients.
President Obama is hoping these measures, which continue through the end of the year, will boost a fragile economic recovery from the worst recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s.
Compromise has been hard to achieve this session, with House Republicans promoting an aggressive agenda of spending cuts and deficit reduction as part of an overall philosophy of shrinking government involvement in the lives of the American people.
Last fall, the House GOP objected to the payroll tax cut and benefits extension unless they were paid for with steep cuts in government programs elsewhere. But Republicans were paying a political price for their objections on these proposals and finally decided to agree to the extensions and eliminate the issue from the election-year discussion.
There was pragmatism in the House GOP decision, and we applaud Republicans for acknowledging that what they got in this agreement — and they did get some concessions from Democrats — was better than nothing. That’s what politics is all about.
We know that this does not mean the end of gridlock, but it is progress nonetheless. The payroll tax cut and jobless benefits extensions are good measures that will give considerable help to millions of Americans at a time they need it most. Yes, deficit reduction must remain a priority, but the economy is in greater need of this boost now.
