EDITORIAL: The birthday of freedom

Democracy isn’t easy, but it’s surely worth the effort

TERRE HAUTE — “When in the course of human events …”



It was hot on July 4, 1776, too.

Especially in Philadelphia, Pa., where the Continental Congress took the extraordinary step of voting unanimously to declare the United States of America free and independent from the British crown.

These founding fathers, by joining together in one of the greatest triumphs of human spirit ever recorded, set an incredible and treacherous course for themselves that, with an enormous sacrifice of blood, sweat and tears, produced the greatest country on Earth. And it did so with freedom as its cornerstone.

The powerful words of that declaration speak for themselves still today.



“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”



While the founders set a sound ideological course, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. America quickly grew into a large and diverse country with a mix of ethnicities and cultures. That diversity remains today, even though the nation has in many ways been a true melting pot.

The United States’ success has come about for many reasons, including its complex but effective system of self-governance which relies on democratic ideals. Its Armed Forces have protected its people and kept them secure, thanks to the millions of men and women who’ve worn military uniforms and defended their country for more than two centuries. To them we owe eternal gratitude.

Democracy has never been easy. It wasn’t in America’s early days, and it isn’t today. But it’s well worth the effort.



“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”



On this July 4th holiday, Independence Day, we observe the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of a great country. Americans can be proud of what they have accomplished.

Happy birthday, America.
