Take dangerous conditions seriously

TERRE HAUTE — This is not a grand revelation to anyone who travels interstate highways, but it’s worth pondering the next time you’re speeding along in heavy traffic with distractions all around.

The Indiana State Police on Tuesday issued its report on the deadly I-70 crash near Plainfield last month involving 41 cars and trucks and one fatality. The agency reports the pile-up was caused by poor visibility from a sudden snowfall and cars traveling at speeds considered too fast for weather conditions.

We’ve all been there. Just substitute the sudden snowfall for “rain,” or traffic congestion, or a construction zone, or a deer, or a distracted driver, and you know the margin for error on the freeway can often be slim.

In the next month or so, the reconstruction of I-70 between Terre Haute and Indianapolis will resume. The last two construction seasons have been particularly violent and tragic on I-70, due in large part to motorists not being careful enough in and around work zones.

More drivers obeying all traffic laws and showing greater attention to various conditions along the interstate will make traveling safer. Pledge to be part of the solution.

You can say that again

“I think we’ve hit the teachers pretty hard the last couple of years, and I don’t think we need to keep doing things that from their perspective would hurt them. I think we should just pause for a little while and let some of these changes we’ve made be implemented and let things go on for a little bit.”
