MAX JONES: Farewell to Stephanie, for a while

TERRE HAUTE — The Tribune-Star and its legions of readers throughout the Wabash Valley were extremely fortunate six years ago to welcome back a native daughter.

After a distinguished journalistic career that took her to New York City (Sports Illustrated) and then to San Francisco (the Examiner and Chronicle), Stephanie Salter, a late ’60s graduate of Garfield High School, decided to return to Terre Haute in 2004 and to work for her hometown newspaper. She wanted to be closer to her aging parents, and the opportunity to join the T-S allowed her to do so.

We were more than glad to have her. It’s not often that a mid-sized newspaper such as the Tribune-Star can hire someone with Stephanie’s range of skills and experience.

As expected, Stephanie did marvelous work and helped make your newspaper better. Readers, of course, were regularly treated to her skilled writing and insightful commentary. In the newsroom, however, her presence was felt in a wide variety of ways. Her experience and professionalism became part of the workplace culture as she quickly developed into a key player and colleague on the newsroom team. Not only did she demonstrate a mastery of her craft, she also loved her community and was proud to be part of one of its valuable institutions.

Although Stephanie is leaving the Tribune-Star as an employee (her last work day was Thursday), I am happy that her columns will return to the newspaper after a short hiatus this winter. When spring arrives, I anticipate her columns will bloom from our pages, as well.

I know by the multitude of comments from readers over the years that Stephanie’s contributions to the newspaper have been enjoyed and appreciated. Let’s hope her writing continues to grace our pages for years to come.

I join my newsroom colleagues today in wishing Stephanie all the best as she embarks on a new phase in her life. We thank her for all she’s done for the Tribune-Star and look forward to seeing her column logo on our pages again in a few months. That day cannot come soon enough.
