TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute should be proud this week that it’s hosting a statewide human rights training conference. Jeff Lorick, executive director of the Terre Haute Human Relations Commission, is to be commended for his work in bringing the conference here and helping to put the program together.
One of Terre Haute’s favorite sons, Greg Bell, will be guest of honor and keynote speaker at a special conference event tonight at the Ohio Building. The community could not present a more deserving and respected individual to be front and center for its guests.
Bell, a Terre Haute native and graduate of Garfield High School, is an Olympic gold medalist in the long jump (1956, Melbourne, Australia). His athletic achievements have stood the test of time. Yet his integrity, class, humility and dignity are his greatest personal assets. After his incredible college career in athletics and academics, he became a dentist. Now 79, he lives in Logansport and remains director of dental services at Logansport State Hospital.
When Bell takes the podium to address the 110 conference attendees and the public who purchase tickets, Terre Haute puts its best foot forward.
We join the community in welcoming the human rights conference, and in giving Bell a hearty “welcome home.”
And another thing
Our compliments go out to the 280 volunteers who stepped forward last week to donate their time and energy to the United Way’s Day of Action. The volunteers tackled 30 projects around the community and made a significant positive impact wherever they were.

Congratulations to Greg Lansing, new men’s basketball coach at Indiana State University. ISU and its men’s program were fortunate to have someone of Lansing’s experience level and caliber ready to take on the job when former Coach Kevin McKenna resigned to take an assistant job at the University of Oregon. Lansing was an assistant throughout McKenna’s three-year tenure and has a reputation as a great recruiter. We wish him well as he takes on this new position.
