Noteworthy in the News: A new president at Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE — A new president at Rose-Hulman

In a little less than two months, a new president will take the helm at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He is James C. Conwell, a global engineering executive and engineering educator. The college announced the appointment on Monday.

Conwell’s arrival on campus, scheduled for May 1, will come slightly more than a year after the passing of previous President Matt Branam, who died suddenly in his office last April. It’s been a long, difficult year for the Rose community, and we’re pleased to see the search for a new leader come to an end.

Conwell, 54, is vice president of Jacobs Engineering Group, a Fortune 500 company, which provides engineering and technical services to such industries as automotive, defense, mining, oil/gas, aerospace and pharmaceuticals. He lives in Brighton, Mich., north of Ann Arbor.

Conwell’s new job is an important one for Terre Haute. Not only will he be leading the nation’s top undergraduate engineering school into the future, he will become a high-profile ambassador for the community.

We join Rose-Hulman in welcoming Conwell and wishing him well.

We also join the chorus of recognition for Rob Coons, who served as interim president after Branam’s death. It was a tough job that Coons handled with grace and class. We’re pleased that Coons has been named to a new position, that of senior vice president and chief administrative officer, a senior role that will include responsibility for implementation of Rose-Hulman’s strategic plan.

You can say that again

“To be safe, I believe it is in the best interest of a city council to seek an independent source to assemble a more complete and non-political picture [of city finances]. In recent years, myself and, I believe, other members of [the] council have had doubts about our true financial condition.”
