Staying in touch with citizens

TERRE HAUTE — The citizenry undoubtedly has a litany of expectations on its elected officials. Some items may differ on that litany, depending on the citizen creating the list. But rest assured one item will be on almost anyone’s list: The willingness to listen to constituents, answer their questions, and discuss options for resolving issues large and small.

To the credit of the Vigo County Council (and the commissioners who joined in), Vigo County citizens can put a check mark by that item. Several council members and commissioners met with a group of farmers this week to discuss a variety of issues. We applaud the effort.

For new council member Rick Burger, the meeting with farmers marked the fulfillment of a campaign promise he made when running for office last year. He said the practice of elected officials meeting with various segments of the community is simply good government. This time it was farmers. Next time, it will be a different group with different concerns.

Other divisions of local government have done similar things, but this is the first time in a while it has been done by county elected officials.

It’s a great idea and we’re pleased to see it converted into action. We encourage county leaders to continue, even expand, the practice.
