EDITORIAL: UAP makes a major mark

New medical clinic will serve wide area of Wabash Valley

TERRE HAUTE — Union Hospital Health Group reached a new milestone this week in the development of state-of-the-art health-care facilities in Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley.

The spanking new UAP Clinic Medical Office Building opened its doors to patients on Monday. Its location on North Sixth Street is on Union Hospital’s northside campus, which places it in close proximity to the main hospital and related clinics.

The opening means that UAP has moved many — but not all — of its medical services from its longtime clinic in the heart of downtown Terre Haute on Sixth Street between Poplar and Walnut streets. That facility had served the community well for more than five decades, but more space was needed for many medical services, and the time had come for a more modern facility as well.

For the medical services that have been transplanted to the new building, being closer to Union Hospital will be a very good move. For those remaining downtown, they’ll have more space as well.

The new four-story building has 106 exam rooms and 29 special procedure rooms. It’s been under construction for approximately 16 months and represents a $22 million investment in health care for people of the Wabash Valley.

Folks who’ve been admiring the new structure during construction will get the opportunity to see it up close on Saturday. UAP is offering an open house, free health screenings and an exhibit from 2-4 p.m. at clinic. If you can get there, you should go. We think you’ll be impressed.

Health care is a key ingredient in Terre Haute’s economy and culture. It draws people to the community from a wide area of west-central Indiana and east-central Illinois. Seeing this kind of major development within Union Hospital’s health system simply reinforces the importance of health and medicine to the region’s residents.

We join the community in congratulating UAP for its outstanding and impressive addition to the medical facilities of the Wabash Valley.
