Editorial: Help us fill the baskets

Christmas Basket Fund provides holiday cheer to area’s needy

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute and west-central Indiana are full of kind and generous people who often share with those less fortunate. We see this in particular at this time of year when special things happen because of selfless contributions from so many special people.

In fact, it is because of our communities’ commitment to helping make the Christmas holidays the best they can be for the greatest number of people that the Tribune-Star’s Christmas Basket Fund has thrived for more than 80 years.

Last week, on Thanksgiving Day, we again launched the annual fundraising drive, an activity that channels contributions from our readers and friends into the eventual distribution of food baskets to needy families.

We’ve set another ambitious goal — $30,000. This would allows us to purchase 600 food baskets to distribute on Christmas Eve.

Making the Basket Fund a successful venture each year requires lots of teamwork from our employees, managers and partners.

Among are partners are Baesler’s Market, B&B Foods and the Salvation Army. Baesler’s Market is providing the food for baskets at cost, a very generous contribution. B&B Foods is donating a refrigerator truck to store the food baskets after they have been assembled and until volunteers deliver them on Christmas Eve. And the Salvation Army does the difficult work of creating a list of needy recipients.

We could not do this without all of them.

We’re also pleased to report that Boo’s Crossroads Cafe will be providing breakfast for the volunteers delivering baskets on Christmas Eve.

We know there are many worthy causes, and we are thankful that, year after year, so many of you choose to join us in our fundraising effort.

If you would like to volunteer to help us, you can contact Michelle Poorman at 812-231-4360 or Kim Wilkerson at 812-231-4219.

Meanwhile, donations to the fund can be sent to the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund, 222 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

In addition, donations of gently used or new children’s books are being accepted.

We would be pleased to receive your kind contributions and donations. They will be put to good use.
