TERRE HAUTE —
Before the recent Christmas season slips from our collective minds and we welcome a new year to the Wabash Valley, we are compelled to extend our deep gratitude and appreciation for the outpouring of support for the 2011 Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund.
The project, ongoing now for more than 80 years, is guided each year by T-S employees with the dedicated assistance of local volunteers, the Salvation Army, Baelser’s Market and other institutions.
The fundraising goal was ambitious this year — $25,000, a sum that would allow us to purchase and distribute 500 food baskets to needy families in the Wabash Valley. We made it, with inspired donations large and small.
The two largest donations came from a student organization whose tradition it is to raise funds on our project’s behalf, and from a relatively new community group that contributed to the Basket Fund for the first time this year.
The student group is, of course, the Cecil T. Lobo Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The student group raised $1,560 this year.
The new group is the Miracle on Seventh Street Committee, which raised $1,500 for the Basket Fund from several of its recent holiday events.
Duke Energy also made a sizable donation of $1,000, as did an anonymous donor.
Overall, we raised more than $26,000 and have seed money in the bank to get the fund drive started for next year.
T-S employees were joined by a number of local volunteers last Saturday, Christmas Eve, to deliver the baskets throughout the area. We could not have done it without them.
We know that the generous people of the Wabash Valley have many options for making charitable contributions year round, so we consider it a privilege and an honor that so many of you choose to donate to our cause year after year. We appreciate the faith and trust you put in our project, and we pledge to continue to do whatever we can to maintain that trust.
The employees of the Tribune-Star thank you for helping us help others enjoy and embrace the spirit of Christmas.
