EDITORIAL: A ‘giant’ for his hometown

Weatherford continues to help Terre Haute, Valley get better

Home is where the heart is. That’s true for all of us. In addition, your heart can take you home.

This past weekend, Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley brought home one of their own. It has been several months since the Super Bowl when the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots. Our own Steve Weatherford had the game of his life in which he proved that a punter can make an impact. With several key punts, and while setting a Super Bowl record for punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, Steve became a Super Bowl champion.

For Steve, he is a Hautean through and through. During last weekend, Weatherford came to town and on Saturday morning spent time buying shoes for underprivileged kids and then went to Fairbanks Park to participate in the Rush the Punter Run that benefited Success by 6 and United Way of the Wabash Valley. More than 650 runners participated and the majority of them were kids. Steve was available for photos and autographs. Kids and adults were treated to a great time.

Through the events, Steve was gracious and appreciative of being a part of the fun. As people were thanking him for his participation, he was quick to thank them back for coming to the event and helping to raise money for a good cause. He was genuinely grateful and proud to be from Terre Haute and to give back to his hometown.

Fact is, he has been doing it for many years before this one. Steve has been buying shoes for kids and contributing signed items for auctions ever since he became a professional football player. He also helped to get other athletes to donate autographed items to raise money for causes all over the Wabash Valley.

It was great to have Steve Weatherford back in town, and it is great to see his pride for Terre Haute shine wherever he goes and in whatever he does. He is giving back because he loves the town and the people who live here. He wants to make it a better place and he does so with his contributions.

Congratulations, Steve, on your accomplishments. Thanks for what you do on the field, and we appreciate all you do off the field to help your hometown.
