EDITORIAL: Good choice for stability

New chief justice right person at right time

TERRE HAUTE — For the first time in 25 years, Indiana will have a new chief justice for its Supreme Court. For those who value stability on the state’s highest court — and we count ourselves among those who do — the appointment Tuesday of longtime Justice Brent Dickson is good news.

A panel voted to make Dickson chief justice to replace Randall Shepard, who retired in March after a distinguished tenure leading the court. Dickson has been serving as interim chief justice since Shepard’s departure.

From appearances, Dickson’s appointment won’t bring a wave a change in the way the court does business. That’s a good thing. The court has been working its way through considerable turnover during the past year, so having an experienced, steady hand who pledges stability is exactly what the court needs as new members get acclimated to their important positions.

The court has two new members — Justices Steven David and Mark Massa — and will have at least one more new member later this year. Justice Frank Sullivan plans to retire from the court this summer to teach law at the IU School of Law in Indianapolis.

At age 70, Dickson is the longest serving member of the court. He was appointed by Gov. Robert Orr in 1986. Because of his age, Dickson’s elevation to chief justice won’t produce long service. His term is five years, but he says he won’t stay even that long. He will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75 before his term ends.

The panel was wise to listen to the voices of current justices who spoke in Dickson’s favor this week. His colleagues seem to appreciate his civil, stable method of handling court business, and there is little doubt the state’s judicial system can benefit from that approach.

While retired Chief Justice Shepard built a legacy of innovation and renewed access to state courts during his long career, Dickson’s role will be somewhat of a caretaker. The day will come in the not-to-distant future when Indiana can benefit from a dynamic judicial leader as chief justice, but now is not that time.

We congratulate Dickson on his new role as chief justice. He will serve the state well.
