TERRE HAUTE —
By a little after 4 this afternoon, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett will have been sworn in for a second term and City Councilman-elect Robert All will have taken the oath of office for the first time.
We heartily congratulate both for their election victories — especially as Republicans swimming upstream in a Democrat current — and wish them great success.
At the same time, there’s something missing from this picture: the Democrats who were elected to City Council, City Court Judge and City Clerk. Those officials, elected on the same day as Bennett and All, were sworn in on Dec. 22. The Democratic Party chief calls that swearing-in ceremonial and not meant to be divisive by not including Republicans Bennett and All. Of course, it was more than ceremonial, as it included all of the trappings of officialdom with a judge administering the oaths.
Maybe the exclusion wasn’t divisive, but it certainly divided the city’s leadership, with no good reason other than politics.
Councilman-elect All stated it well in a story reported by our Arthur Foulkes last week: “In the spirit of unity, I would have liked to have been there” when the other City Council members were sworn in.
And he should have been. That All didn’t ask to attend is not justification for not inviting him. Or for not inviting Mayor Bennett.
Terre Haute city government exists to serve all citizens, regardless of party, and all elected officials should be sworn in at the same time.
Unfortunately, the city doesn’t get a chance to do this again — and do it right — until 2016.
