EDITORIAL: A worthy wish list

Foundation compiles a treasure for givers

TERRE HAUTE — Amid the flashier holiday advertising sheets tucked inside last Thursday’s Tribune-Star, we hope you found a booklet labeled “2012 Holiday Wish List” that was compiled by the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.

If you believe — as many do — that the holidays are overcommercialized and that the real deals involve remembering those in need, you need to look inside that booklet.

It lists 64 nonprofit organizations in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties that are worthy of your charitable donations. And in a novel way, it allows you to contribute money for one of three specific uses identified by each organization.

These organizations form the bedrock of our communities through programs that serve our safety, health, families, arts, environment, recreation, history, religion and society. Without these organizations, our cities, towns and neighborhoods would suffer.

Increasingly each year, the foundation does a great job of coordinating fundraising for those organizations and is a vital and significant force for a regional community that cares deeply and broadly about its citizens.

Please consider contributing.
