EDITORIAL: In praise of partnerships

Working together will help address community problems

TERRE HAUTE — The institutions of higher learning that mean so much to the economy, culture and identity of Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley have broad and diverse impact on our communities. Education and employment are not their only contribution. Not by a long shot.

We’ve been reminded this week of the deep vein of good citizenship that exists in our local colleges and universities. On Wednesday, we learned that Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is partnering with the City of Sullivan to help develop a new park in a blighted area north of the downtown square.

And that’s not all.

On the same day, our Sue Loughlin broke the major story that Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley is joining forces with the Terre Haute Humane Society in an effort to move the local animal shelter to an Ivy Tech-owned building in southern Vigo County.

The Humane Society needs a new facility, and it has been discussing the possibility of a partnership with Ivy Tech for months. A feasibility study came back favorably, so the two entities are now in the planning stages of a fundraising campaign.

If all goes well, the Humane Society and the animals it serves will benefit greatly from a new facility and more advanced veterinary attention. Ivy Tech and its students will benefit by creation of a course of study that includes veterinary assistance and kennel management.

Down in Sullivan, the community is getting top-notch civil-engineering assistance from Rose-Hulman in the current academic quarter to create a park environment on the neglected grounds where Central Elementary once stood.

The old buildings have become an eyesore and are in the process of being removed. Rose’s help will allow Sullivan to proceed efficiently with this timely revitalization project.

We applaud the willingness of all involved to become partners in these good causes. Our communities become better places because leaders of important institutions and public entities look beyond their walls and borders to find solutions to urgent problems.
