TRIBUNE-STAR EDITORIAL: City, campus get their chance to show off

TERRE HAUTE — It’s been a while since downtown Terre Haute has seen the kind of high-profile activity that will be taking place this weekend on the campus of Indiana State University.

For the first time since 2001, ISU is hosting the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which opens at noon today at a refurbished Marks Field.

As Sports Editor Todd Golden writes on the front page of today’s sports section, the event marks a coming-out party of sorts. ISU has been working in recent years to upgrade its 43-year-old athletic facility in anticipation of this weekend.

There have been two other events at Marks Field this year, but this is the big one, a showcase for all the good work that’s been done. The championships also provide the chance for ISU’s stellar track and field teams to show off for their hometown fans.

Of particular note for ISU supporters will be the opportunity to witness the performances of national indoor pole vault champion Kylie Hutson of Terre Haute and star runner Erica Moore of Sullivan. Veteran sports writer Andy Amey wrote profiles Erica and Kylie for today’s front page. Take a look.

The event is a major undertaking similar to the NCAA Cross Country Championships which ISU hosts each fall at the LaVern Gibson Course. In this instance, however, the action will be centered just a few blocks from downtown. Having so many visitors on our city streets will create an electric atmosphere. Both town and campus are sure to take full advantage of this chance to shine.

We welcome visitors to our city and to ISU, and we wish you a pleasant stay. The community is happy to have you here. If you give our people and our businesses the opportunity, we are confident they will show you how much your presence is appreciated.
