• In Thursday’s Tribune-Star story headlined “Storm damage to delay park opening,” the nature of storm damage causing the delay was incorrectly stated.
Recent rain-induced flooding of the lake inside 500 Maple Park caused the waters to rise above the trail system there, and high winds knocked down tree limbs within the park. Other wind-related damage at Collett Park has consumed the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department’s resources, and repairs at 500 Maple Park have been delayed.
A new levee is being cut near the Wabash River on the west side of U.S. 41 North. Dirt from that new levee site will be brought to 500 Maple Park and used to raise the ground level up by 2 feet to prevent future lake flooding.
Also, bass donated for the lake there were provided by the Department of Natural Resources, not the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
• The Richard G. Lugar Grove at Dobbs Memorial Park stands along Poplar Street on the expansive park’s southwest corner. The grove of trees recently was named for the longtime Indiana senator in recognition of his contributions to conservation. According to city park superintendent Eddie Bird, the park originally was named “John D. Dobbs Memorial Grove.” The entire park — which includes a Nature Center, a Native American Museum, a 3-acre pond, a 25-acre state nature preserve and more — is named in honor of Dobbs. That information may have been unclear in coverage of the Lugar Grove dedication in the June 4 Tribune-Star.
