‘Archer’ kicks off season for Brazil Concert Band

BRAZIL — The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, presents “The Archer and His Lady” at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Forest Park Band Shell or Pavilion if rain.

The “Archer” is “William Tell Overture” by Rossini in a fine transcription, with soloists Shelley Criss and Julie Dugger. It has been owned by the band for more than 100 years and will be conducted by Janelle R. Huber who recently graduated from the Indiana State University School of Music with a bachelor of music education degree.

Huber won the coveted Presser Scholarship at ISU and plans on furthering her musical career with advanced degrees in orchestral and wind band conducting.

She is a winner of the ISU Concerto Competition on piccolo and was piccolo soloist in the ISU Wind Ensemble throughout her college years.

Janelle Huber was student director of the ISU Symphony and plays piccolo and third flute in the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. She is a long-time member of both the Brazil Concert Band and the Jackson Township Community Band.

The “Lady” is the famous musical “My Fair Lady” by Lerner and Loewe and an all time favorite of both the BCB and its audience. Special guest vocalist is Jodi Green Wingler of Greencastle.

Wingler has appeared extensively in professional and community theaters throughout Central Indiana including the Indianapolis Opera, Footlite Musicals, Hendricks Civic Theater and Putnam County Playhouse.

A Greencastle graduate, she holds an undergraduate degree from DePauw University and the master’s in library science from Indiana University.

Wingler, who has a daughter in high school, has appeared in such favorites as “Oklahoma!,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Kiss Me Kate,” “The Music Man,” “Oliver!” and “South Pacific.”

The 75-member Brazil Concert Band, winner of the 2006 Sudler Silver Scroll for Historic Bands, will also offer the following concert gems on opening night: “The Black Horse Troop” by Sousa, “A Percy Grainger Suite” arranged by Erickson, “Flags of Freedom March” by Sousa, “The Syncopated Clock” by Anderson, “Jacques De Molai” by Jewell, “The Band Played On” arranged by Yoder, “Beauty and the Beast” arranged by Custer, “Noble Men” by Fillmore and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
