'Over the River and To the Woods' concert Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra will join with the music and theater department at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College to present “Over the River and To the Woods” a concert of choral and instrumental music, at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Cecilian Auditorium at the college.

Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for students and children. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from the Conservatory of Music.

Narrator for the concert will be Sister Jeanne Knoerle who began her career at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. After entering the Sisters of Providence, she taught journalism, before earning a doctorate in Chinese literature and teaching in Taiwan and at the Woods. She served as president of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College for 15 years and later became a program director in the Religion Division of the Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis.

The program will begin with the Madrigal Singers from St. Mary-of-the-Woods singing four madrigals beginning and ending with French carols.

Other performers in the first half of the holiday performance include The Woods’ Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, vocalists Elyse Marshall and Tabitha Mark, and Sharon Ammen, associate professor of theater, narrating “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

The Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra will take the stage after intermission and open with “In the Bleak Midwinter.” Other selections will include “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” “Pat-a Pan,” “Children’s Christmas Eve,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Silent Night.”
