TERRE HAUTE —
Roby George, Indiana State University School of Music’s director of bands will conduct a concert entitled, “Soloists of Distinction” with the Wind Orchestra and guests at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Tirey Hall’s Tilson Auditorium.
For this concert, George “wanted to present the music in an unusual format, in ways that make a typical band concert seem atypical.” George feels that he accomplished his goal by incorporating piano and voice into the band concert.
The concert will open with composer Ron Nelson’s “Aspen Jubilee” featuring undergraduate Shelly Mitchell, lyric soprano. This will be followed by “Four Maryland Songs” by Jack Stamp featuring faculty artists Colleen Davis, soprano; Peggy Balensuela, mezzo-soprano; and Kara Claybrook, soprano.
“I’ve always been a fan of Ron Nelson’s music and my friend Jack Stamp has a unique American voice in his own right as a composer,” George said.
The next piece, which contributes to the atypical nature of the concert, will feature the faculty pianists Martha Krasnican and Beverley Simms. The duo will perform composer Paul Bowles “Concerto for Two Pianos, Winds and Percussion” in four distinct movements. Joining the pianists on stage will be the faculty winds Nik Taylor on oboe, Kelley Rogers Niiyama on clarinet and Rob Waugh on trumpet. The percussionists for the work will be faculty artist Jimmy Finnie and graduate student Kyle Lutes.
“The concept of the concert was built around featuring special guest Tianshu Wang on Gershwin’s famous ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’” said George.
Wang, currently professor and head of the keyboard area at Capital University’s Conservatory of Music in Columbus, Ohio, is acclaimed by the press as a “superbly talented pianist” who plays with “prodigious technique and eloquent phrasing.” Wang’s performance with the ISU Wind Orchestra will conclude the not-so-typical band concert.
Admission is free. For more information, contact the School of Music at (812) 237-2771.
