Masterworks Chorale presents ‘Gloria,’ selections from ‘Magnificat’

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State University School of Music Student Ensemble Series will present the Masterworks Chorale in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday in Tilson Auditorium.

The 70-member choir will perform with a 22-member chamber orchestra led by School of Music faculty member Mark Carlisle, to present two well-known large scale works.

The first piece on the program will be the Italian composer and violinist Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria.” The work presents the traditional Gloria from the Latin Mass in 12 varied cantata-like sections.

Featured soloists with the choir and orchestra in the Vivaldi selection will be School of Music voice faculty members Colleen Davis as soprano soloist and Peggy Balensuela as alto soloist.

Selections from the second work to be performed will be those from composer and conductor John Rutter’s “Magnificat.” The work is based on the passage from St. Luke, chapter 1, verses 46-55, that is known as the “Magnificat.” Rutter describes his setting of the text as providing musical energy and rhythm to the “poetic outpouring of praise, joy and trust in God, ascribed by Luke to the Virgin Mary on learning that she was to give birth to the Christ.”

Tickets to the event will be available at the door, or by calling the School of Music at (812) 237-2771.

Tickets will cost $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free to ISU students with student I.D.

Attendance by campus and community members is encouraged and welcomed.
