Brazil Concert Band to perform Sunday

The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will present “The Pumpkin Center Cornet Band” at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Forest Park Band Shell, or Pavilion if rain.

Composer Fred Jewell leaves us with a bit of a mystery as there are two villages by the name of Pumpkin Center in southern Indiana. Subtitled “A Rube Comedy,” Jewell’s cleverly written medley embraces country tunes of the mid- to late-19th century. It was found and published 18 years after his death by his son.

The band performance will include other works from its upcoming second CD, “The Brazil Special.”

“Pageant of Progress,” “Neola Waltz,” “Radiant Youth Overture,” “American Boy,” “Sabbath Morn,” “Jacques De Molai,” “Happy Lads,” “The Scarlet King” and “March of the Prophets” will be played this week.

The band will play “Shrine of Liberty” from its first CD release, “The Jewell of the Wabash.”

Also this weekend, the Jackson Township Community Band will stage a two-hour performance Saturday at the Clay City Pottery Festival. The 1 p.m. concert is in the park.
